Movie Freak 77: Top 10 Films of 2013

The year 2013 was a very important year for Hollywood. With the studios releasing many sequels as well as franchise launching movies, there were many box office hits ('Despicable Me 2' and 'Iron Man 3') and many flops ('The Lone Ranger' and 'R.I.P.D'). But now that we are saying goodbye to 2013 and welcoming a new year, the most important thing must be done: announcing the best 2013 films. Here is Movie Freak 77's list for the best movies of this year. A reminder to all our readers that ratings is not the only factor taken into consideration while making the list.
At the end If you agree or disagree with Movie Freak 77's list, you are most welcomed to leave a comment behind and tell us what you think of this list and if you think other movies should have been included.

10. We're The Millers :
'We're The Millers'.

Arguably the best comedy of 2013, 'We're The Millers' surprised many by how a simple and maybe overused elements can make a very funny and enjoyable movie. On top of that, join a talented cast, who were able to portray genuinely funny characters that elevated the movie, especially "Jennifer Aniston" who once again showed why she is still one of the best comedian actresses in Hollywood. In addition to fresh new twists and over-the-top laughs, 'We're The Millers' became one of the highest grossing original comedy movie of the year.

9. Rush :

Oscar-winner director "Ron Howard" finally was able to bring a true adaptation of  Formula 1, a sport that has been finding difficulty in adapting it into a good movie. But taking as reference one of the biggest rivalries of F1, 'Rush' was a perfect embodiment a movie that can join meaningful personal development with good thrilling action scenes. "Chris Hemsworth" and "Daniel Brühl" deliver one of the best on screen duo chemistry of this year, that made watching 'Rush' that much more enjoyable with its near to perfect choreographed racing scenes ever done.

8. Fast and Furious 6 :
Fast and Furious 6

After the success of 'Fast Five' many predicted that 'Fast and Furious 6' will without a doubt be a box office hit. But what many were afraid is that it will fall short, but as many know it was a great movie. The family theme of the movie along with the over-the-top action sequence is what makes  'Fast and Furious 6' and the series enjoyable. A new director taking over 'Fast and Furious 7' and the tragic death of "Paul Walker", who did not finish shooting all of the his scenes are all factors that are surely going to put a huge question mark on the future of this series. 'Fast and Furious 7' has postponed its release till April 2015.

7. Star Trek Into Darkness :
Star Trek Into Darkness

With the successful reboot of 'Star Trek' in 2009, many were anticipating this sequel to be one of the best. And it surely didn't disappoint. Being directed by "J.J Abram", the whole world that he created for this franchise brought to it freshness that continued on. And with great performances from its cast, especially "Benedict Cumberbatch", this amazing sci-fi movie made audience to experience this world with pleasure. But with "J.J. Abrams" not returning as director for the third movie, due to his commitment with 'Star Wars VII', questions are being asked if his successor will keep the success of this movie.

6. The Hunger Games:Catching Fire :
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

'The Hunger Games' was a phenomenal success in 2012 and launched the new franchise that was going to leave it mark on Hollywood. With 'Catching Fire' came better changes to the franchise: new talented actors, better set pieces and great story continuation. And being led by Oscar-winning actress "Jennifer Lawrence" will surely keep this franchise's odds in its favor. But the question is with the big cliffhanger in the end of the movie, changes in the series and new casting additions, will the 'Hunger Game' series continue to be on fire?

5. Frozen :
Frozen.

If you had told me early in the year that I would choose a Disney animated movie to be in my list, I would have told you that you that it would be almost impossible. But here we are, 'Frozen' has truly brought Disney back to its glory days. With magical special effects, 'Frozen' was able to infuse magic, imagination and enjoyment into a great movie experience. Choosing actors according to their capabilities rather than their star power was a great choice from Disney. And the sequence of 'Let It Go', one of the best original songs of 2013, was one of the best movie moments of 2013. Disney has found its new classic story for the new generation.

4. Iron Man 3/ Thor: The Dark World :
Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World.

Continuing with the massive success of 'Marvel's The Avengers', Marvel Studios commenced its 'Phase Two' with 'Iron Man 3', which brought one of the biggest movie-villain surprises in movie history and was the highest grossing movie of 2013. Then in November 'Thor: The Dark World' was released, capitalizing from the box office success of its predecessors and improving in many aspects from 'Thor'. But with the release of new franchises in the coming years, excluding 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier', many are wondering if Marvel's movies will be able to continue with this unprecedented success.

3. Gravity :

This project has been in production for quite a while, due to the decision to wait for new and emerging technology to bring the space-thriller movie to life. And to life it was brought, director "Alfonso Curano"'s movie was the talk of the world from the day it was release and until now. The realism that was seen to the attention to detail was exquisite, and watching it in '3-D' showed the true potential that this technology can achieve. But even though the script wasn't as magnificent as the effects, "Sandra Bullock" and "George Clooney" were able to pull off astonishing performances.

2. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug :

After the decision to divide the 'Hobbit' trilogy into 3 movies and the lukewarm reception by many of 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey', many feared that this movie would not be at the same caliber as the first one or the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy. But what people must realize that the vision of "Peter Jackson" is what matters. 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' was truly enjoyable and the new additions made to the story such as "Evangeline Lilly"'s character and the return "Orlando Bloom" as 'Legolas' led to a great movie that tied up with the whole 'Middle-Earth' cinematic world. And to be honest the incarnation of 'Smaug', voiced by the talented "Benedict Cumberbatch", was enough for many label this movie spectacular.

1. Man of Steel :

Expectations were unbelievably high for this movie, first because people and fans were demanding a true and grounded reboot for this iconic characters, and second because this movie determined whether Warner Bros. and DC Comics were going to be able to launch their own version of 'Marvel' superheroes. And let me say as a fan of 'Superman', 'Man of Steel' no doubt was the best movie of 2013. The vision of director "Zack Snyder", along with the exceptional grounded story of "Christopher Nolan" and "David S. Goyer", led to one of the best 'Superman' movie ever. And the casting of "Henry Cavill" as 'Superman/Clark Kent' was spot on, though I'm sure his potential will show more in future sequels.
Now with the announcement that a sequel will be made and that it will be a 'Batman vs. Superman' movie, plus with the casting of many DC Comics superheros such as "Ben Affleck" as 'Batman/Bruce Wayne' and "Gal Gadot" as 'Wonder Woman', the pressure is on for this sequel to deliver in order to further solidify whether or not a 'Justice League' movie a la 'The Avengers' style should be made.
