Official '12 Years A Slave' Poster.
One of the biggest awards-winning movies of the 2013, '12 Years a Slave' is a movie not to be reckoned with its exceptional and emotional reaction that one gets when watching it.

"Chiwetel Ejiofor" and
"Michael Fassbender".
"Sarah Paulson" and
"Lupita Nyong'o".
In 1841, lived a free black man named 'Solomon Northup'(Chiwetel Ejiofor), who lived with his wife and two kids in New York and knew how to play the violin. One night, 'Solomon' accepts the grateful invitation from two men (Scoot McNairy and Taran Killam) to allegedly join their traveling circus. But little did he know that this invitation would a worse kind of life-changing invitation. After a night of heavy drinking, 'Solomon' wakes up and realized that he has been tricked, kidnapped and sold into slavery. Here his tough journey to reclaim his freedom, but little does he knows that this horrendous journey will change his life forever. Other characters include 'Edwin Epps'(Michael Fassbender) one of 'Solomon''s owner, 'Patsey'(Lupita Nyong'o) a young female slave, 'Marry Epps'(Sarah Paulson) 'Edwin''s wife, 'William Ford'(Benedict Cumberbatch) one of 'Solomon''s owners, 'John Tibeats'(Paul Dano) a racist carpenter, "Garret Dillahunt" who plays a former overseer, 'Eliza'(Adepero Oduye) a female slave, 'Theophilus Freeman'(Paul Giamatti) a slave owner and 'Samuel Bass'(Brad Pit) a Canadian laborer.

"Steve McQueen" was searching for a while to do a movie about the slave era in America. And one day when his wife accidentally found the 1853 memoir of "Solomon Northup" named 'Twelve Years a Slave'. And without the help of "Brad Pitt"'s production company, this movie would have never been made and given the necessary finances. This book truly depicts the slave era in America in a very realistic way, which allows you to truly feel what you are reading. Over the years there has been much successful movie adaptation about slavery, most notably the 2012 movie 'DjangoUnchained'. But this movie will resonate with many due to the realism in the depiction of what really happened at the time, while showing a very small perspective of a man who witnessed what occurred during the pre-civil war and dark era in American history.

"Chiwetel Ejiofor".
This movie was director "Steve McQueen"'s only third feature film after 'Hunger' and 'Shame'. And his streak of providing movies related to what a person can do or affect his or other's body and mind. The approach of showing us disturbing scenes works very, even though it may not appeal to many audiences. His directing style suited perfectly this movie. The stunning images and visuals further augment the movie and the time frame of the movie. "John Ridley"('Three Kings') wrote a beautiful script and many emotional dialogue scenes that will surely be remembered in years to come. The only problem with the story was that more emotional development could have been included in certain scenes. And as usual "Hans Zimmer"('Man of Steel' and 'The Lion King') provides a score that nourishes the movie.

"Scoot McNairy", "Chiwetel Ejiofor"
and "Taran Killian".
The time frame of the movie fine, though still certain scenes could have been trimmed and the pace of the movie is satisfactory. This movie includes very raunchy and horror-like scenes, which as mentioned before will not suit many. From one point many can argue that these scenes were a bit too much; on the other hand, other will side with the direction taken due to the fact that it must be showed how dreadful and horrible Southerners at that time used to treat the black American people without any reason at all. The most over-the-top yet moving scenes were that of 'Solomon' being hanged, 'Patsey' begging to die, and 'Patsey' being savagely whipped. The whipping scene was intense in emotion, and these kinds of scenes are what made this movie such a powerful emotional rollercoaster. The ending was moving and heartbreaking.
"Chiwetel Ejiofor".
"Lupita Nyong'o" and
"Chiwetel Ejiofor".
The cast had an array of talented actors and actresses. "Chiwetel Ejiofor" gave a refined performance, though during the award season he will fall short of winning due to the intense battle in this year. "Michael Fassbender" keeps proving that he is an actor not to be sidelined, since he profoundly gave his all in his portrayal of monstrous character, though his character could have been given much more depth. The star of the movie for me was newcomer Mexican actress "Lupita Nyong'o", who kills it in her portrayal of such a fragile yet strong woman. "Sarah Paulson" provides a well villainess and her character's clash with 'Patsey' allowed "Nyong'o"'s character to have more development. "Paul Giamatti", "Benedict Cumberbatch", "Paul Dano" and "Garret Dillahunt" all pull of sophisticated performances when needed. "Adepero Oduye" was a pleasant addition, and "Brad Pitt" gives character a great deal of importance, even if his presence was very short.

'12 Years a Slave' is sure going to pick multiple awards during the awards season (already winning Golden Globe for Best Picture-Drama and listed in various lists as the best movies of 2013) and is most likely face stiff competition from 'Gravity' and 'American Hustle' for the Academy Award for Best Picture
