Review: Captain Phillips

Review: Captain Phillips
*Spoilers Alert
Do NOT forget to rate this post when you finish.

Based on a true story, comes the thrilling and very well executed film headlined by one of the most talented actors of all-time "Tom Hanks".

"Tom Hanks".
"Burkhad Abdi".
This movie talks about the harrowing story of real life US Captain 'Richard Phillips'(Tom Hanks), whose is instructed to take his cargo ship, the MV Maersk Alabama, along with 20 crew member to Mombasa, Kenya in order to load over 15,000 metric tons of cargo. But moving in very dangerous waters, a group of four hijackers attacks the cargo ship. Here very tough decisions will be taken by 'Phillips' in order to ensure the survival of his crew, also his too. Moreover, 'Phillips' will endure one his worst moments of his career. Other characters include the pirates: 'Abduwali Muse'(Barkhad Abdi) the pirate's leader, 'Najee'(Faysal Ahmed), 'Bilal'(Barkhad Abdirahman), and 'Elmi'(Mahat M. Ali). We also have 'Andrea Phillips'(Catherine Keener) 'Phillips's wife, 'Shane Murphy'(Michael Chernus) MV Maersk Alabama first officer, 'Mike Perry'(David Warshofsky MV Maersk Alabama chief engineer, 'Ken Quinn'(Corey Johnson) MV Maersk Alabama helmsman, 'John Cronan'(Chris Mulkey) senior crew member of MC Maersk Alabama, and "Max Martini" as U.S Navy Seal Commander.

"Tom Hanks".
"Faysal Ahmed" and
"Burkhad Abdi".
The year 2013 award season was full of movies based on or inspired by true events, same as 'Captain Phillips', which unfairly dismissed in the Best Actor Category at the 86th Academy Awards. Based on real events that occurred plus the book 'A Captain's Duty' written by "Richard Phillips", the man portrayed by "Tom Hanks". When a story with a well known ending is being given a big screen adaptation, directors and writers face a big issue trying to fill the middle of the part with ideas and events that will make the audience want to watch the movie. And since 'Captain Phillips' is basically put under the action thriller genre, the movie takes full advantage of that providing us with probably one of the best thriller movie of 2013.

"Faysal Ahmed", "Corey Johnson",
"Burkhad Abdi" and "Tom Hanks".
"Faysal Ahmed" and "Tom Hanks".
Director "Paul Greengrass" has been known for directing one of the best action thriller movies ('Bourne' Series). Therefore, "Paul" was basically in his comfort zone delivering a constantly thrilling movie, while still balancing the drama and emotional depth that this story is supposed to have. Still at some points during the movie, his attempts fall flat. Screenwriter "Billy Ray"('The Hunger Games') successfully drew from the book and made a movie that relies mainly on the suspense and rather on how events unfold, while still giving most of the characters the depth needed to support the movie. Composer "Henry Jackman"('X-Men: First Class' and 'G.I.Joe: Retaliation') impressed with a score that helped maintaining the level of suspense that were present in the movie.

"Burkhad Abdi".
"Tom Hanks".
Being a thriller movie, the beginning felt a bit slow compared to the remaining 80% of the movie. But seeing that these scenes were setting the basis of the main characters we were about to see in action, it was quite normal that the first 20 minutes feel a bit slow. But once it picked up, the movie really starts to show its strength and providing the thrill that audiences are expecting to see. Some of my favorite scenes included the pirates attach on the MV Maersk Alabama ship, the conversation between 'Richard' and each of the three pilots in the ship's life boat, and of course the climax of the movie which was the best part of it. The final scene was really one of the most touching and emotional extensive seen I have ever watched.

"Faysal Ahmed".
The movie was technically put on the shoulders of "Tom Hanks", which once again proved to everyone the star power and ability to have to hold an entire movie. "Hanks" once again proves why he is one of the elite actors in Hollywood and why he will probably remain one of the best. The performance he gave in the last scenes was the highlight of the movie. Being snubbed in the Best Actor Category at the Oscars was totally unfair. "Barkhad Abdi" is the rising star of the movie and of this year. From working as a limousine driver to becoming an award nominee star shows that what he put on table was truly due to a talent that he has inside of him."Faysal Ahmed" was super convincing, same as the remaining actors who played the pirates. The decision to allow "Hanks" to meet the four actors who played the pirated during the invasion scene brought reality to the scene. The remaining cast provided solid performances overall to support the main cast.

'Captain Phillips' in the best thriller movie of 2013, though it may not win many awards in the main categories, it will sure be remembered in the future.
