The
movie that catapulted the whole 'Fast and the Furious' franchise was an
acceptable low budget movie that showed the potential that the whole series held.

After a semi-truck loaded with electronics is stolen by three Honda Civic
cars just outside of Los Angeles, undercover LAPD detective 'Brian O’Connor'(Paul
Walker) is assigned to this case to find out the people responsible for this
theft. While infiltrating in a parts shop to try and make connections, he
starts to flirt with the shop's patron 'Mia'(Jordana Brewster), which allows
him to meet with her famous street racer brother 'Dominic Toretto'(Vin Diesel).
After a street race between the two, in which 'Dominic' wins it, 'Brian' helps
him escape the police which allows him to enter 'Dom''s inner circle. There
'Brian' will learn a new side of himself and a new life filled with family,
friendship and trust. Other characters include 'Dom''s girlfriend 'Letty Ortiz'(Michelle
Rodriguez), 'Dom''s childhood friend 'Vince'(Matt Schulze), leader of the
Little Staigon crew 'Johnny Tran'(Rick Yune), computer expert 'Jesse'(Chad
Lindberg), and LAPD sergeant and 'Brian''s supervisor 'Tanner'(Ted Levine).

Many watched this entertaining movie not knowing that this movie would actually
be the beginning of a long and continuously fresh series. At the time no one knew that bringing
a movie that was purely about car racing with its familial and friendship stories would become such a hit. What surprised many is that this gritty car film could include such accessible and complex characters that
actually drove the film and made it enjoyable more than the racing itself.
Moreover, the movie led the way for its newly discovered and emerging talented cast at
the time to shine and become famous stars in the years that followed its
release. This made the movie one of the biggest surprise hit of the year.

At
the time, director "Rob Cohen" was known for directing 'Dragonheart'
and 'The Skulls'. In general, "Rob" crafted a pretty enjoyable
movie, capturing the essence and the culture of Illegal Street racing in the
night, not knowing that this culture crafted would be one of the main basis on
which the franchise will be relying on. Writers "Erik Bergquist",
"David Ayer"('Training Day') and "Gary Scott
Thompson"(who would later become the creator of the 'Fast and Furious'
characters) all were relatively unknowns at that time. The ability to balance
between the racing thrill and development of worthwhile characters was done
very well, while still providing an engaging story. Composer "Bryan Wayne
Transeau" gave a good basis for the upcoming franchise scores.

What many enjoyed about this movie, and ultimately the whole franchise, is the
depiction of the environment and culture of the movie. The way this environment
was depicted with a sense of realism while still knowing it was all made up is
what truly amazed many. Furthermore, at that time the action and racing
sequences were fresh and very upbeat, yet not close to the degree of madness as
the coming movies. Still it included many of the iconic moments that would
influence coming scenes such as the drag race, the truck chasing scenes, and
the parade of different exotic cars. But the final showdown between "Vin Diesel" and "Paul Walker" with the train and "Diesel" pulling the car on two wheels was by far the best scene of the movie and possibly the series.
The
main cast would eventually become one of the most iconic characters in movie
history. "Vin Diesel" is practically known and would be forever
associated with 'Dominic Toretto', whose family bond and infused trust in them
is very idealistic, which made fans appreciate him. Same is said about
"Paul Walker", who after his tragic death late 2013 allowed the world
to see how much of a fan base he was able to form playing 'Brian
O'Connor'. "Michelle Rodriguez" and "Jordana Brewster"
gave layers to their characters, which made their female presence count in this
series. Also the chemistry between the four actors, whether as siblings,
friends or lovers is really strong and approachable. The good-bad character that
"Matt Schulze" brought to 'Vince' was a surprisingly enjoyable one.
It was unfortunate that "Chad Lindberg"'s likable character was
killed, while "Rick Yune" gave a mediocre act as the main villain of
the movie.
After the massive success of 'The Fast and the Furious', a new cinematic
universe culture was born. Check Out '2 Fast and 2 Furious' Review by clicking on it.
