Review: Non-Stop

Review: Non-Stop
*Spoilers Alert
Do NOT forget to rate this post when you finish.

Official 'Non-Stop' Poster.
Surely not the most 'out-of-the box' thriller-action movie as depicted in the trailers, but thanks to "Liam Neeson" this movie is sure to be a thrilling non-stop movie.

"Liam Neeson".
"Julianne Moore".
'Bill Marks'(Liam Neeson) is an alcoholic U.S. air marshal, who decides to take a non-stop flight from New York directly to London. Once the plane takes off , 'Bill' receives a text message from an anonymous sender, who threatens that he/she will kill a passenger every 20 minutes unless 'Bill' finds a way to transfer $ 150 million to a specific bank account. After checking the credibility of this threat, 'Bill' will soon find out that finding this person will be difficult than expected, especially since he is sinking himself deeper and deeper to what looks to be a very much orchestrated and planned scheme. This scheme will be deadly and will threaten the life of the passengers, flight attendants, pilots and 'Bill' himself. Other characters include passenger 'Jen Summers'(Julianne Moore), flight attendant 'Nancy Hoffman'(Michelle Dockery), cell phone programmer 'Zack White'(Nate Parker), pilot captain 'David McMillan'(Linus Roache), creepy passenger 'Tom Bowen'(Scoot McNairy), flight attendant 'Gwen Lloyd'(Lupita Nyong'o), passenger 'Austin Reilly'(Corey Stoll), 'Jack Hammond'(Anson Mount), co-pilot 'Kyle Rice'(Jason Butler Harner), Dr. 'Fahim Nasir'(Omar Metwally) and Agent 'Marenick'(Shea Whigham).
"Michelle Dockery".
"Nate Parker".
The entire story premise at first glance look at providing a movie filled with every bit of cliché possible in the movie genre; action-thriller movie. From a hurt leading character, to the hijacking of one of the most small possible places a movie can ever be shot in(which is an airplane), to the device of communication (text messaging), many might think that this kind of movie is destined to flop. But casting "Liam Neeson" in the lead allows the movie to successfully work due to his status as the leading action star of Hollywood these days. Being in the 'Taken' film series (Check Out 'Taken 2') as well as other action movies such as 'The Grey', "Liam" definitely is the driving force behind this movie. 'Non-Stop' could have brought a lot more to the table due to the bag of potential that this movie hold, which was tampered with a story, which its loose ends were badly handled and tied in the end.
"Anson Mount".
"Lupita Nyong'o".
Director "Jaume Collet-Serra", who previously collaborated with "Liam Neeson" in the psychological thriller 'Unknown' back in 2011, in my opinion performed a very daring and exceptional job. Shooting in a restricted location such as an airplane, where the entire movie takes place in surely must be challenging. But his directing style, which fits action movies, surely gave a stylish and creative plus to the movie using smart blocking and framing to take advantage of the constricted place. Screenwriters "John W. Richardson", "Chris Roach" and "Ryan Engle" are all newcomers to big movie writing, who managed to keep a solid script but their lack of experience was clear when dealing with the number of turns and twists that weren't tied up in the most fashionable of ways(mainly in the final twist). The score performed a decent job complementing the genre with thrilling scores to accompany the themes, which was composed by "John Ottman"('Valkyrie' and 'The Losers').
"Scoot McNairy".
"Liam Neeson" and
"Michelle Dockery".
Introducing us directly to the main character in my opinion was done in a clever manner, not diving too much into the past in such a detailed manner. Still the usage of his past wasn't truly successfully incorporated into the script. The first half introduced us to the characters and which of them will play a role in the unfolding of the story and start to go into the main plot. The second half dives more into the main problem and shows us also the other point of views other than that of 'Bill'. The inclusion of media to factor into the story in my opinion was a clever choice especially with the world that we are living in. The third half include the main action attraction of the whole movie, which with its unrealistic unfolding still was thrilling enough to be one of the best scenes of the entire movie as well as summing up the movie; bag of potential that was narrated in the least optimal manner. In addition there were many subplots that weren't brilliantly matter or infused in the story and didn't have the emotional impact it should've had.
"Julianne Moore" and
"Liam Neeson".
"Liam Neeson".
Obviously looking at the marketing promotion, "Liam Neeson" is the star of the movie. He is the driving force of the entire film and the main reason why many people flocked into the theaters to watch the movie. His performance as the lead action star is always believable and allows the mediocre realization moments of this movie to stand out. These characters were played well by these actors, who weren't used in an optimal manner, which is a shame since it could have helped the movie have more of an emotional connection. "Julianne Moore" provide a decent character and sidekick to "Liam"'s character. "Michelle Dockery" performed as the main flight attendant character, "Nate Parker" and "Scoot McNairy" played interesting characters, "Anson Mount"'s character role could have been expanded, "Corey Stole" fared well, and "Lupita Nyong'o"'s character was very much underused, which could have helped the movie seeing her Oscar win. The remaining actors supported the movie well.

In the end, 'Non-Stop' cannot be put as one of the best action-thriller movies of all-time wasting the talent of its actors/actresses, but it will sure attract many audiences thanks to "Liam Neeson".
