"Snow White and the Huntsman",
included in my 'Best Movies of 2012' list, is a modern dark take on the classic
story, which delivers even though it had it weaknesses.
After 'Ravenna'(Charlize Theron) the evil
queen took control, the kingdom 'Tabor' is in a dark place. When 'Ravenna' asks
her magical mirror (Christopher Obi) to determine whether she is the fairest,
it is revealed that 'Ravenna' should consume 'Snow White’’s (Kristen Stewart)
pure heart so that she can become the fairest. But when 'Finn'(Sam Spruell)
goes to fetch the girl, 'Snow White' manages to escape. Furious, 'Ravenna'
forces the 'Eric the Huntsman'(Chris Hemsworth) to bring her 'Snow White'. Here
a magical but dark story commences where love, rebellion, hope, and self
discovery are main themes in it. We also get to know 'William'(Sam Claflin) son
of 'Duke Hammond' and lover of 'Snow White', 'Duke Hammond'(Vincent Regan), and
the dwarfs: the leader 'Beith'(Ian McShane), the blind 'Muir'(Bob Hoskins),
'Muir''s son 'Quert'(Johnny Harris), brothers 'Coll'(Toby Jones) and
'Duir'(Eddie Marsan), ill -tempered 'Gort'(Ray Winston), 'Beith''s right hand
man 'Nion'(Nick Frost), and the youngest dwarf 'Gus'(Brian Gleeson).
With the successful modern adaptations of
movies such as 'Alice in Wonderland', it was inevitable that the most famous
fairy tale story of all 'Snow White' was going to be made. And overall I think
the movie was adapted in a very good way. It was a story that focused 50% on
the women's aspects and their way of thinking, but I was very happy of the dark
mood and theme that was brought to the movie. I loved the modern twist that was
done. The main twist was portraying 'Snow White' as a heroin rather than a
beautiful face and a sweet character like in the stories told. So I commend the
writers who wrote the screenplay and tried to reinvigorate this already known
story, but still the script was a little bit confusing.
The director "Rupert Sanders" had
his directorial debut. He is best known for directing television advertisements.
But he is chosen ultimately because his directing style matched with the theme
and the story's direction. For his directorial debut he did a good job. The
visual effects were really dazzling, and it had new elements that had never
been seen before such as the 'Dark Army’, which were made of glass. And who can forget the human shape mirror, which was a 'WTF moment' in the movie. And the
costumes had both the classic and modern feel to them, and the clothes of
'Ravenna' were the more fascinating ones. And actually the film got nominated
for an Oscar for the categories of 'Best Visual Effects' and 'Best Costumes'. And "James Newton Howard" did a great job and helped the movie so much, just like in 'The Hunger Games' and 'The Bourne Legacy'.
It was the right move to start the movie like
it did. At one point it was maybe a little bit long; however, it did set up the
background story a little bit and set up the mood of the movie. The problem
with this movie was the pace, where at some story points it was fast and at
others it was slow. I was really disappointed that the story of the
'resistance' wasn't elaborated more. One of my favorite scenes was the first
battle against the 'Dark Army', as well as the final attack on the castle. The
thing I was disappointed with was the ending; they could have done it in a
better way. It was kind of a disappointment.
The main cast of the movie did a good job;
nevertheless, there were some uneven acting. Moreover, the different accents
that were used were also unfavorable. To be honest, I was really skeptical of
"Kristin Stewart" playing 'Snow White', but she did a really good job
in my opinion. Yes she could have done better, but I think she brought to the
character the right amount of emotions. The best actress by far was
"Charlize Theron". The way she portrayed 'Ravenna' and was able to
bring so much real and raw emotions was just great. She was by far the star of
the movie and outshined everyone.
"Chris Hemsworth" did a good job to
portray a character that brought the twist to the story. The chemistry between
the characters of "Kristen" and "Chris" was odd but at the
same time believable. And their chemistry with the character of "Sam
Claflin" was also a good one. "Sam" did a good job but hoped for
a more developed story for his character. The 8 characters that played the
dwarfs did a great job, but the character that stuck with us was of course the
youngest one 'Gus' played by "Brian Gleeson". The other supporting
characters did an 'ok' job.
In conclusion, I do advice everyone to watch
this take on the most famous fairytale story of all time. And I think even
though it had it weaknesses you will be able to enjoy this movie. Hopefully the
sequel will be a good one.
