Official "The Host" Poster.
"The Host(2013)" is one of those movies that had great potential and had its shining moment, but ultimately fell to be the next big thing due to many things.

"Saoirse Ronnan".
"Dianne Kruger".
In the future, and extraterrestrial race called 'Souls', which inhabits human, take over Earth. 'Melanie Stryder'(Saoirse Ronnan),one of the resisting humans, is captured by the Seeker(Diane Kruger) who is hoping to locate through her the location of the resistance. But when she is assimilated by 'Wonder', one of the souls, here an adventure full of struggle, love, sympathy, and hope will occur. We also get to meet 'Jared Howe'(Max Irons) 'Melanie''s boyfriend, 'Jaime Stryder'(Chandler Canterbury) 'Melanie''s brother, 'Ian O'Shea'(Jake Abel), 'Melanie''s uncle 'Jeb Stryder'(William Hurt), 'Ian''s brother 'Kyle O'Shea'(Boyd Holbrook), and 'Doc'(Scott Lawrence).
When I first saw the trailer and knew that "Saoirse Ronnan" and "Diane Kruger" is in the movie, I got really excited and thought that this may be one of the best movies of 2013. However, I was disappointed by the end result. There were many holes in the plot, many ideas could have been used much more, many ideas were overly used, relationships that could have been taken advantage more within the plot, and a movie that lacked the continuous spark that other movies in its genre have. The movie is based on the same-name movie written by "Stephanie Meyers", the same person who is responsible for the 'Twilight' series, which frankly I'm not a big fan of. So I expected some problems ; however, I did expect more than what I got in the end.
"Max Irons" and "Willam Hurt".
"Max Irons", "Jake Abel", and
"Saoirse Ronnan".
I think the writers did a poor job with making the movie from beginning to end firm. The writers left a lot of loose ends regarding many factors. There were FOUR writers, including "Meyers", I don't know if that affected the writing process, but they should have done a better job. The director of this movie is "Andrew Niccol", who is best known for directing 'Lord of War' and 'In Time'. For me he was one of the positive things in this movie. He gave it a certain aesthetic feeling that was new and different, especially if we compare it to the same movie genre. And the music which was done by "Andrew Pinto", who is known for scoring 'Lord of War' and 'Snitch' also did a good job. His music really gave certain scenes the extra emotional push, especially the ones between the love triangle of 'Melissa', 'Ian', and 'Jared'.
"Dianne Kruger".
"Saoirse Ronnan".
The beginning of the movie was really solid, though the opening scene wasn't that impressive. But from the time they assimilate the 'Soul' into 'Melissa' the movie start to have its ups and downs. The flashback that allows us to know the characters could have been done in a better way. They should have taken advantage of the scenes between "Saoirse" and "Dianne". And thereafter, when 'Melissa/Wonder' arrives at the human's hideout, were too long. The relationship between 'Melanie', 'Jared', 'Ian', as well as the conflict between 'Jared' and 'Ian' could have been utilized so much better. As many mentioned before, many loose ends were left and the biggest one is that of the 'Souls', which somehow disappeared in the last 40-30 minutes of the movie. I expected more action and stunt scenes, and the ending could have been done shorter as a post-credit scene, but overall the ending was predictable and could help lead to sequels.
"Jake Abel", "Max Irons",
"Saoirse Ronna", "Willaim Hunt",
and "Boyd Holbrook".
"Jake Abel".
"Saoirse Ronnan" for me did a great job. It wasn't her best for sure, but she was able to carry on the movie. "Max Irons" will definitely attract all the women, and I was surprised that he did a very good job 75% of the time. Another surprise is "Jake Abel", he actually did a really good job. The trio had great chemistry as the love triangle of this movie, but the scenes between "Jake Abel" and "Saoirse Ronnan" had much more emotional depth than that of "Max Irons" and "Saoirse Ronnan". "Dianne Kruger" is one of my favorite actresses, she did a good job given the material she had. However, the way they left her character loose at the end and not giving her a proper ending was such a disappointment, though her acting in that last scene was formidable. The other supporting actors did an OK job, however many stories such as the relationship between 'Melanie' and 'Jaime' as well as 'Ian' and 'Kyle' were poorly done and not well utilized.
In the end, the movie fell to expectations since it had great potential to be the next big thing. Hopefully it will do well at the box office so we can see a better done sequel.
