The sequel manages to make this movie a more
grounded movie than 'Rise of the Cobra'. You can sense that the theme and mood
of the movie is a lot darker and less humorous than the first one. And for me
this is a good and better approach. The movie as a whole is better than the
first one. In this one, the cast was better, and the projection of the story
and characters of G.I. Joe was more accurate than the first one. But alas it
has its flaws related to story and character development. The story was much weaker
than the first one and in the first one the characters stories were a lot more
than this one.
I think choosing director "John M.
Chu" to helm and somehow reboot this franchise was a good decision. First
of all, he is a huge G.I. Joe fan so he was able to turn the characters in a
great way on the big screen and polish the movie. However, the director has yet
to grasp the experience of being a blockbuster director. He is great regarding
action sequences, but he has yet to learn to merge character development with
the action sequences. I think the writers of 'Retaliation' came up with a
weaker story than 'Rise of the Cobra'; furthermore, 'Rise of the Cobra''s
character development stories were much more attractive and effective than this
one.

The pace of the movie felt a little bit quick
and the time frame of the movie could have been extended. In my opinion it
would have helped the movie. Delaying the release of the movie for converting
it to 3-D was a good financial decision. But the 3-D was not used in a new and
creative way, but it was good and had its moments, like the swords and insects
flying. The special effects were much better. "Henry Jackman", who
was responsible for the music in this movie and who worked on movies such as
'Kick-Ass' and 'X-Men: First Class' was good, but wasn't great. They should
have tried to keep "Alan Silvestri", since his work on 'Rise of the
Cobra' really helped the movie overall.

The opening sequence was a good way to
introduce us to the new characters and what is occurring. The first part of the
movie was very much introducing the new audiences to this franchise, and
letting the people who watched the first one know what is happening. My
favorite scene was the ninja mountain battle. I think it brought something new
to the table and added to the movie. I would have loved if they had extended
the part where the G.I. Joes were getting themselves ready for the final
battle. It would have been a good opportunity to make us bond even more with
the characters. The final battle was good but it wasn't something new. And the
ending was definitely a little bit disappointing, but a good way to pave the
way for a sequel.

The cast in this movie was 85% changed, and I
had mixed feelings regarding this decision. The new characters were good, but
the people who saw 'Rise if the Cobra' knows that the characters were really a
strong point. Now I understand the need to reboot the franchise, but they
should've informed us what happened with them and why weren't they included. The addition of "Dwayne Johnson" as 'Roadblock' was a great decision;
he did a very good job leading this movie. And his bromance with "Tatum"'s character was really good. Very disappointed that they killed
"Channing Tatum"'s character, I think it was a bad decision. However,
in the movie they never really showed us true evidence that he was dead, so
hopefully they will find a way to return him in the 3rd movie.

"Bruce
Willis" was a good choice to play "Joe", but would have loved
more involvement from his character. "Adrianne Palicki" and
"D.J. Cotorona" were good and had good romance chemistry, but the
writers did them injustice with their character's development. "Jonathan
Pryce" was good playing both the evil president and the good one, but he
is still not the greatest evil. "Ray Park", "Byung-hun
Lee", and "Elodie Yung" played the most interesting characters
and they all did a good job, though the character of "Yung" wasn't
given justice by the writers and they didn't really tell us how 'Storm Shadow'
was still alive. "Ray Stevenson" did a good job playing 'Firefly',
and I was so disappointed that "Joseph Gordon-Levitt" didn't return
to play 'Cobra Commander' but seeing that they didn't show us his face make us
hope that they will be able to convince him to return.
Is 'Retaliation' better than 'Rise of the
Cobra'? In some sorts yes, but it wasn't the huge improvement that we were
hoping for. We only hope that 'G.I. Joe 3' will be able to raise the bar even
more.
