Official "Oz the Great and Powerful" Poster.
From the director of the 'Spider-Man' trilogy and the producer of 'Alice in Wonderland', we get 'Oz the Great and Powerful', a spiritual prequel to the classic 1939 movie 'The Wizard of Oz'. It is a visual masterpeice that lackes a good script and falls sometimes short in the acting department.

The movie takes place in 1905 Kansas, where 'Oscar Diggs'(James Franco) a barnstormer and a small-time magician was trying to escape a fight through an air-balloon, when suddenly he gets sucked in by a mysterious tornado that lands him in the wonderful 'Land of Oz'. There he will bark on a great adventure, where he meets three witches: 'Theodora'(Mila Kunis), who falls in love with him, 'Evanora'(Rachel Weiz) beleived to be the 'Wicked witch of the West', and 'Glinda'(Michelle Williams) the Good Witch of the South. He will also meet 'Finnley'(Zach Braff) a winged monkey, 'China Girl'(Joey King), and 'Master Tinker'(Bill Cobbs).

Disney wanted to bring something so iconic and make it its own. And in a way, Disney achieved that. It must be noted that Warner Bros. didn’t allow Disney to use similar aspects from the original film, due to the fact that Warner Bros. owned the rights. First of all, for all those who think it is a prequel to the 1939 movie ‘The Wizard of Oz’ you are mistaken. Yes it does take place before the events of the classic movie, but it is a Disney interpretation of the character ‘Oz’. It is us a movie that shows  what happened so that ‘Oz’ was able to discover himself. So the movie’s description of being a ‘spiritual prequel’ is somehow accurate. There were many things in this movie that form some sort of relationship with the 1939 movie. For example, the opening sequence black and white and then transitioning into color, the bubble travel, the scarecrows, and Dainty China Country.

The movie is inspired by the book series ‘Oz’. The story was a little bit weak. The story of ‘Oz’’s growth was good, but the writers failed to do a good job with the development of the other characters, especially the ‘Wicked Witch’. “Sam Raimi”, whose famous work as a director is the ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy, did an amazing job with this movie. The visual beauty and aesthetics that he brought to the film made it so much better. He made ‘Oz’ fans feel the magic that they felt while watching the first movie. Though I usually hate movies shot with a green screen, I thought in this one that the producers and director did a good job to make it feel somehow real. The 3D was used really efficiently and in a good way, though many times it was used in a cliché way. The effects were incredibly well executed, especially on the digital characters like ‘China Doll’, ‘Finley’ and flying ‘Apes’. The music, which was done by “Danny Elfman” was really good and really helped elevate this movie.

The overall flow of the movie is good, though it had its ups and downs. The beginning black and white sequence was maybe a little bit long. But then when the tornado started the movie kind of picked up the pace. I think more time should have given for the scenes between ‘Theodora’ and ‘Oz’’s scenes together, since I didn’t 100% believe in their romance. Then after ‘Oz’ meets ‘Glinda’, and ‘Evanora’ turns her sister wicked, the movie went back down especially in the scenes where he was meeting all the good people of ‘Oz’. And after that during the ‘battle’ scene the movie upped the pace. And by the way I thoroughly enjoyed this scene, and though it was greatly done. The ending was predictable and maybe a little bit fast, especially concerning the banishing of the wicked witches.

"James Franco".
Moving on to the cast, I think casting “James Franco” as ‘Oz’ was a good call. I would say he was able to do a really good job ‘90%’ of the time. The overall chemistry with the cast was really good. But what is really surprising is that I thought that he had better chemistry with the digital characters rather than the human characters. Though I love “Mila Kunis” I didn’t think she did a great job. When she turned into the ‘Wicked Witch’, her performance was much believable. It was interesting to see “Rachel Weiz” in that kind of role, and I think she did a good job, even though at some point it was overdone. “Michelle Williams” was at time great but at others she fell flat. “Zach Braff” and “Jeoy King” for me were the surprising factor of the movie. Voicing ‘Finley’ and ‘China Doll’ respectively, and doing such a good job was amazing. And they provided some of the funniest and greatest moments of the movie. “Bill Cobbs” was good, and as for the other cast members I think they did an OK job.
Overall the visual and emotional aspect was what made this movie an enjoyable movie. Disney is already planning a sequel. I only hope that they will see what mistakes they have done with this one and try to fix them so that the sequel will be better.
