Review: Gambit
'Gambit' talks about 'Harry Dean'(Colin Firth), who is planning to
revenge his abusive and evil boss 'Lord Lionel Shabandar'(Alan Rickman). To do
that, he and his accomplice 'The Major'(Tom Courtenay) decide to search for a
woman, 'PJ Puznowski'(Cameron Diaz) an unpredictable woman, to convince 'Lord
Lionel' to buy a fake Monet Painting called 'Haystacks at Dawn'. There also
'Zaidenweber'(Stanley Tucci), an expert in recognizing fake paintings, as well
as the grandma (Cloris Leachman) of 'PJ'.
This reboot, if we can call it that, cannot be compared to the first
one, mainly since I haven't watched the original, due to the fact that I can't
find it. So this review is solely based on watching this one. And to be honest
this movie was really average. If I hadn't seen the trailer before watching
'Safe Haven' in the theatre and been up to date with movie news, I would have
probably never heard of it. It was poorly marketed, and I think they were
right, since nothing in this movie was new.
The opening scene put you directly into the heart of the movie and what
is going on. And from here until the moment 'PJ' arrived to London, I thought that the story telling was a little bit too fast. I loved how they showed us what
'Harry' thought the operation would go like in his mind, and then showing us
what really happened. But I think this point was a little bit uneven. The way
he thought the operation would go was done a little bit fast and rushed, while
what actually will occur was a little bit too long. The ending was in some way
unexpected.
For me it was an unusual choice for Oscar winner "Colin Firth".
Seeing him the 'The King's Speech' and then in this movie, one would wonder what he
was thinking. But he actually did a really good job. "Cameron Diaz"
also did a good job, but it is certain that this performance wasn't her best at
all. And seeing "Diaz" with this accent was a little bit strange, but
she rocked it. And of course, the chemistry between "Firth" and
"Diaz" was one of the good things in the movie. "Alan
Rickman" was a nice choice to play 'Lord Lionel'. "Tom
Courtenay"'s character could have been used much more, in the middle of
the movie it was like he disappeared. Finally, it is always nice to see
"Stanley Tucci" and "Cloris Leachman" in comedic roles,
even though they were also not used well.

This movie is a
remake of the 1966 film 'Gambit’. It’s a nice movie, which includes a talented
cast that lifts it up, but by no means is 'Gambit' a great movie.

I think the movie's story is nice, yet not completely innovative. Maybe at
the time the original movie came out it was. But today it is certainly has nothing that 'brings something new to the table'. The writers could have added new material to the
movie to make it that more interesting. The director "Michael
Hoffman" did a good job. In my opinion his directing made this movie
enjoyable to watch. And the music, which was provided by "Rolfe
Kent", was nice and gave the movie an extra push that it needed.

In the end, it is always nice to watch a comedy movie. And this one is a
nice and watchable movie. But if you are expecting a hilariously funny, well I
am sorry to tell you that you will be disappointed.
