The ability for an animated movie to be one
of my favorite romantic movie (other than favorite movie) is still beyond comprehension, but the ingenuity
of this movie and its emotional depth makes 'Wall-E' one of my best romantic-comedy(and
animated) movie ever.
In the year 2085, the Earth is now a deserted
planet covered with garbage due to consumerism, which was encouraged by mega
corporation Buy-n-Large. With the evacuation of the human population in fully
automated starliners, only one 'Wall-E'(Benn Burtt), a garbage collector robot,
is left standing after he is able to repair himself. Apart from his regular
duties, he collects human civilization artifacts and keeps them his home. Few
days after he discovers a growing seeding, a spaceship lands on Earth deploying
'EVE'(Elissa Knight), an advanced robot probe sent to search for the seeding.
An unusual romantic connection will be formed between these unusual robots which
lead to an adventure of love, friendship and sacrifice, which will indirectly
affect the fate of the humans on that starship. Will love prevail? Will the
humans return to earth? And will change in their living style occur? Talking
characters include commander of the 'Axiom' Captain 'B. McCrea'(Jeff Garlin),
historical CEO of Buy-n-Large voiced by "Fred Willard", the 'Axiom'
computer voiced by "Sigourey Weaver" and 'Axiom' residents
'John'(John Ratzenberger) and 'Mary'(Kathy Najimy).
At the time, 'Pixar' has been releasing animated
movies every 1-3 years and each movie released was becoming a huge hit,
acclaimed by the critics and succeeding at the box office. With the release of
'Wall-E', 'Pixar' reached its peak and remained up there with the release of
'Up' and 'Toy Story 3'. Many will be confused as for the reason
'Wall-E' was chosen between various romantic movies released in Hollywood
history. In my opinion, 'Wall-E' was able to tackle various subjects such
as the environment, development and effect of technology on humans, and the path
that it will lead in the future. But what amazed me that amidst all of these
ideas, the romance and love connection that was created between 'Wall-E' and
'EVE' overshadowed them without belittling their importance. Moreover, the fact that the love connection between
two robots was able to be shown in such a beautiful way was further proof of
the emotional and psychological success of 'Wall-E'.
Director "Andrew Stanton", whose
famous works as an animated director includes 'A Bug's Life' and 'Finding
Nemo', gave another exceptional job. Many remember the box office disaster
'John Carter' in 2012 that he directed, but the movie wasn't a complete disaster
and the love connection and emotions of the movie were evident and clear. And
after his success movie 'Finding Nemo', he was able to direct a visually
beautiful movie showing all of its parts in an exceptional manner. The story
was from "Stanton" and "Peter Docter"('Toy Story'),
and the screenplay was also written by "Stanton" and "Jim
Reardon"(wrote various episodes of the TV series 'The Simpsons'). The
story was simple in its narrative trajectory but filled with emotional meanings, international morals, and narrative freshness. "Thomas Newman"('Skyfall'
and 'Saving
Mr. Banks') produced a masterful score infusing it in a magical way
with the scenes.
The time frame of the movie was acceptable,
though at times the boredom that some audiences might witness is justifiable (in
some parts of the first and second half). The animation of this movie was truly
one of the best visual effects I have personally ever seen. And the animators
used different changes in effects to differentiate the three halves of the
movie. The first half, which sets up the character 'Wall-E' and the romantic
relationship, had a lighter tone (effects and the narration). This half also
included some beautiful visual shots of what remains of earth and one of the
best scenes, which oddly included watching 'Wall-E' going through his usual
business and the comedic/cute interactions with a sleeping 'EVE'. For the
second half the cold and sterile effects were used to accommodate the lazy and oppressive
environment inside the 'Axiom'. This half was enjoyable, but still was the least
favorite between the three halves not diminishing its importance.
For the third half, production designs
infused the romantic/light feeling and effects to the vain situation of the
'Axiom', where resolutions and solutions occurred. My all-time favorite scene
was the space-romantic ride that occurred with 'Wall-E' and 'EVE' around the
'Axiom'. Again my surprise is still existent in how two robotic characters were
able to convey such emotions in an extremely effective way. This is one of the
main reasons that will make these characters memorable ones. Favorite character
that had a voice was that of 'Captain B. McCrea'. The decision to resemble this
character to the actual features of "Jeff Garlin" was an spot on decision. "John Ratzenberger" and "Kathy Najimy" provided interesting
interactions between their characters, while "Sigourey Weaver"
performed well. The problem was the reason the producers and animators used CGI
for the current humans characters, while the character of "Fred
Willard" as the historical CEO of Buy-n-Large and in the movie 'Wall-E'
watched were live ones, which still till this day baffles me. The cockroach , who was the friend of 'Wall-E', was a very enjoyable addition.
Regardless of this small mistake, 'Wall-E'
has become one of the best animated movie and a movie to be watched on Valentine’s
Day (alone or with your date)!
