Official 'Turbo'  Poster.
'Turbo' may not be the most creative animated movie ever made by DreamWorks Animation. That said it sure is an entertaining movie thanks to its colorful visuals and great cast.

"Snoop Dog", "Maya Rudolph",
"Ryan Reynolds", "Ben Schwartz",
and "Samuel L. Jackson".
'Theo'(Ryan Reynolds) is a garden snail who dreams to become one of the fastest and greatest racers in the world and be known as 'Turbo', just like 5-time Indianapolis 500 champ 'Guy Gagne'(Bill Hader). His obsession in speed and all things fast made him an outsider and an embarrassment for his older brother 'Chet'(Paul Giamatti). One night a demoralized 'Theo' accidentally wanders his way into a supercharger during a drag race, where his DNA gets fused with nitrous oxide. The next day, 'Theo' finds himself vested with the powers of speed and accuracy. From here a fast and life-changing journey will take place. Other characters include 'Tito Lopez'(Michael Pena) a 'Dos Bros' taco driver, 'Whiplash'(Samuel L. Jackson) leader of the 'Starlight Plaza Snail' crew, and the 'Starlight Plaza Snail' crew include : 'Smoove Move'(Snoop Dog), 'Burn'(Maya Rudolph), 'White Shadow'(Michael Bell), and 'Skidmark'(Ben Schwartz). We also have 'Angelo Lopez'(Luis Guzman) 'Tito''s older brother, 'Paz'(Michelle Rodriguez) a car mechanic, 'Bobby'(Richard Jenkins) a shopkeeper who makes custom snail shells, and 'Kim-Ly'(Ken Jeong) a manicurist.

When first announced and more details were being released regarding the movie, many got excited including me. Many thought that the movie's premise showed tons of potential to be not our conventional animated movie. However, after watching I have to say that I was a bit disappointed. At the beginning, the film set up the character really good. However, after that the story starts to take a very predictable route that wasn't out of the box, as it was preconceived, which is good for audiences that are aged 10 and below who don't really care. That said, you can't but enjoy the great and colorful visuals, as well as the effort of the cast. And these were the elements that allowed the audience to enjoy the movie.

First time director and animator "David Soren" was the one behind the idea, after he won a DreamWorks Animation competition for all of its employees. Though it did not fast forward, "Soren" pushed the idea and ultimately the script into production. For his first time, I think "David Soren" did an outstanding job directing the movie and his experience as storyboard artist in 'Shrek' and 'Shark Tale' did help and showed in the end result. He also assisted with the script and wrote the story, which as I mentioned before needed more work and new ideas especially in the second half. The effects and visuals were really great and one of the positives elements. Composer "Henry Jackman"('Wreck-It Ralph' and 'Puss in Boots') did a good job backing up and helping the quality of the movie.

The movie's first half for me was the best part of the movie, in terms of story and character development. I actually loved that they gave the audience the time to get to know the main character's problem and way of thinking and living. The second half of the movie was lacking the originality and 'Wow' factor that many were waiting for. However, what salvaged the second half was the great effects and directing style that was used especially during the race, which was one of my favorite scenes. If I had to choose my favorite scene, it has to be that of the 'Theo' and 'Chet' being with the 'Starlight Plaza Snail' Crew, where really you just enjoy watching them interact in a very funny way. The funniest scene had to be that of the snail race that occurred right after the capturing of 'Theo' and 'Chet'.

One of the best elements of the movie, if not the best, was the talented and entertaining cast. Let's start with the movie star "Ryan Reynolds", who again proved that he can handle the weight of carrying the movie. "Reynolds" is one of my favorite rising actors; even though, he was part of many great movies, as well as his fair share of flops, he has yet to have his career defining part. "Paul Giamatti" voiced one of my favorite characters of the movie, same goes to "Samuel L. Jackson", "Maya Rudolph", and "Michael Pena" who all did an exceptional job. "Snoop Dog" actually surprised me how good and funny he actually was, while I expected "Michelle Rodriguez"'s character to have more of a presence. "Bill Hader" did a good job voicing the villain, it was funny seeing "Ken Jeong" voicing an old lady, and the remaining cast were able to support the main cast.
Yes, 'Turbo' is not the best animated movie of the year but it is still a very enjoyable roller coaster ride that is sure to be pleasing for the entire family.
