Official "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" Poster.
"Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters", a horror dark take on the known and lovable Grimm Tale 'Hansel and Gretel', that will make you roll your eyes but at the same time want you to see more of the characters adventures.
"Jeremy Renner".
"Gemma Arterton".
After being abandoned many years ago by their father(Thomas Sharff) in the dark forest and being able to survive the Candy Witch(Monique Ganderton), these days 'Hansel'(Jeremy Renner) and 'Gretel'(Gemma Arterton) are now famous bounty hunters who are dedicated to hunt down witches. One day, when they arrive in Augsburg, they come to know of the kidnapping of 11 children and the attempt to kidnap a 12th child by the evil witch 'Muriel'(Famke Janssen). Here they must try to save these children as well as facing their old demons. We also meet in this story the good witch 'Mina'(Pihla Viitala), fan of 'Hansel' and 'Gretel' 'Benjamin Wosser'(Thomas Mann), Sherriff 'Berringer'(Peter Stormare), Mayor 'Engleman'(Rainer Bock), mayor's Deputy 'Jackson'(Bjørn Sundquist), the Horned Witch(Ingrid Bolsø Berdal), the Redhead Witch(Joanna Kulig), the Tall Witch(Zoe Bell), and the troll(portrayal: Derek Mears and voiced by Robin Atkin Downes).
"Alea Sophia Boudodimos" and
"Cedric Eich".
"Famke Janssen".
With the adaptation of many fairytales these couple of years such as 'Snow White and the Huntsman' and 'Red Riding Hood', adapting 'Hansel and Gretel' was bound to be made. However the way the adaptation was done was surprising. The main criticism about the movie was the film's story which frankly was a little bit a cliché story and the story elements which have been used before. But to be frank this movie was never going to be a great and critically acclaimed movie. Even the stars acknowledged that. The main thing was for audience to enjoy the story and feeling like they want to see more sibling adventures, which to some extent was done.
"Gemma Arterton" and "Jeremy Renner".
"Pihla Viitala".
This movie is "Tommy Wirkola" first big budget movie gig as a director. And after seeing the movie, he did a pretty good job in my opinion. I loved that he shot the movie in Europe and that from the first day of shooting he was rooting for a more European feel to the movie. And this was one of the things that helped give the movie this dark fairy tale feeling to it. However his work of the script was not that good. The story was really weak, and though he tried to incorporate some surprises in the movie, the story overall felt thin and short to expectations. And some of the lines were really cheesy and should have been worked on more. As for the composer "Atli Örvarsson", whose work includes composing for 'Season of the Witch' and the upcoming 'Mortal Instruments: City of Bones', did a good job bringing this dark fairy tale feeling.
"Peter Stormare".
"Jeremy Renner" and the Twin Witches.
The opening sequence was a good way to reminisce about the original 'Hansel and Gretel' story, but at the same time making it compatible with the tone of this movie. Then I liked the transition to the current time and how they showed us how 'Hansel' and 'Gretel' became witch hunters. The time frame of this movie is really enough, and the pacing of each scene and the transition was good. The best scenes were the fighting scenes of 'Hansel' and 'Gretel', where were really fun to watch and coordinated in an entertaining way. The ending was predictable but sets up well for possible sequels.

"Thomas Mann", "Jeremy Renner",
and "Gemma Arterton.
"Famke Janssen".
The main actors "Jeremy Renner" and "Gemma Arterton" are one of the rsising stars. Even Though this wasn't one of their best performances, in the end they did a pretty solid job and enjoying their time. Furthermore, their chemistry is really captivating and one of the positive elements of this movie. The brother-sister chemistry was utilized in a great way. The decision to make separate sub-stories for each character was a good one, especially "Renner"'s character story about having diabetes. "Famke Janssen" was a good addition to the movie. Same as the lead actors this wasn't her best performance but her portrayal of the evil witch was good enough. "Peter Stormare"'s character could have been utilized more, and the characters of "Pihla Viitala" and "Thomas Mann" was interesting. Addition of new elements, such as the troll were positive additions.
In the end, if you are expecting a great movie that you will definitely be disappointed by what you get. However, silly entertainment is what you will get out of this movie.
