"The Hangover Part III" may not
be the epic finale of this trilogy that many expected; however, the changes that
were demanded by many fans made this movie an enjoyable one and a good farewell
movie.

Two years after the events of Bangkok, 'Alan
Garner'(Zack Galifianakis)'s father 'Sid Garner'(Jeffrey Tambor) furious of his
son’s unacceptable behavior dies of a heart attack. Meanwhile, 'Leslie
Chow'(Ken Jeong) escapes from a maximum security prison in Bangkok after
causing a riot. After the funeral of 'Sid', 'Alan''s brother in law 'Doug
Billing'(Justin Bartha) successfully stages an intervention with the help of
'Alan''s friends 'Phil Wenneck'(Bradley Cooper) and 'Stu Price'(Ed Helms) to
send 'Alan' to a rehab facility in Arizona so that he can become better. Of
course what should have been an easy trip turned around after mob leader
'Marshall'(John Goodman) and his head of security 'Black Doug'(Mike Epps) kidnaps
them and force them to find 'Chow' or else they will kill 'Doug'. But they soon
will realize that capturing 'Chow' will not be as easy as they thought. Other
characters include 'Cassie'(Melissa McCarthy), 'Jade'(Heather Graham),
'Stephanie Wenneck'(Gillian Vigman), 'Tracy Billings'(Sasha Barrese), 'Lauren Price'(Jaime Chung), and 'Tyler'(Grant Holmquist).

After the first 'Hangover' movie back in
2009, the series has been getting a lot of criticism. And the second one was
criticized for lack of originality in the story and copying exactly what
happened in the first one. If you are huge fans of the antics and crazy stuff
that occurs in the 'Hangover', this 3rd part may be a little disappointing.
Here the writers took a very different direction and changed the formula that
was used in the first two movies. And if you are a first comer it is preferable
to watch the first two, since this movie is more related about the characters
and the resolutions of each character. In some way it really looks as the end
of a great R-rated comedy trilogy, at the same time it sort of feels like it is
a different movie that is not related to the first 2 parts. Because as a fan
you kind of expect these crazy events occurring in the movie and sadly they did
not appear or the things that appeared were not as crazy.

"Todd Phillips" is back as
director, having previously directed 'The Hangover' and 'The Hangover Part II'.
And talking about directing, I think this is the best job that "Phillips"
has ever done. You can see the improvement in the directing of this movie
especially the great visual landscape imagery as well as the sequences and the
way they were shot. He also reprises his role as producer and writer. In this
movie, he reteams with 'Part II' writer "Craig Mazin"('Identity
Thief') for the movie's script. And as mentioned before they have taken a
different direction in the story, but at the same time they kept some of the
main elements: the one of the wolf pack having a problem, and a mystery that the wolf
pack needs to solve. To say if it works or not purely depends on the person whether
he likes the formula of the previous two movies or wants a new change. For me
it worked but I wasn't 100% with this change. In a sense this story and its cohesiveness
is the best in the franchise but the narration and emotional content removed or
diminished the humor effect in this movie. Composer of the trilogy
"Christophe Beck" does a good job.

The opening sequence was OK, I wasn't totally
impressed with it, but I did like the directing of this scene. And after that
the movie flows in a good manner but as a 'Hangover' fan you constantly wait
for this big moment to occur when something outrageous will occur, and here the
disappointment come since you come to realize that you will not be able to see
such a scene. One thing I'd like to mention is that the trailer ruined the
laughing moments since these moments were all added into the trailer and when
we got to see the movie all of the people had already seen them and laughed at
them. My favorite moments in the movie were the "Melissa McCarthy"
scenes, which were the ones where I had a really good laugh,. One thing is
certain that the humor was much less than the previous two. The ending was
really nice to see as 'Hangover' fans. The things that a 'Hangover' fan would have
wanted to see were included in the hilariously funny post credit scene, which
was extremely fun to watch.
"Bradley Cooper", "Ed Helms", and "Justin Bartha". |
"Zack Galifianakis" and "Jeffrey Tambor". |
In this movie, "Zack
Galifianakis"'s character is the center of the story and plays the main
character. His performance was at times funny but at times less funny. But as
for his character development, it was nice to see the awkward transformation
from a reckless 42 year old man to a less reckless but still funny 42 year old
man. "Bradley Cooper" and "Ed Helms"'s characters were more
of a supporting role to 'Alan'. But still each of their characters had their
time to shine and show us why we love these characters. "Justin
Bartha"'s character has always been a supporting role so I liked that they
increased his involvement in this part. And as always it was nice to see the wolf
pack and in the end when we see them walk the walk in all 3 movies, it was
nostalgic but enjoyable to see and remember their journeys.
"Justin Bartha", "John Goodman", "Ed Helms" ,"Bradley Cooper" and "Zack Galifianakis". |
"Ken Jeong". |
"Ken Jeong" did not offer something new in
regards to his character 'Leslie Chow', but it is always nice to see him play
all the clichés related to a crazy Chinese man. "John Goodman" played
the villain in very convincing way and his story was done well. "Melissa
McCarthy" is on fire, and it was a great decision to include her in the
movie, since her scenes with "Zack" were the best. And as a
'Hangover' fan, it was nice to see all actors "Jeffrey Tambor", "Mike Epps",
"Heather Graham", "Gillian Vigman", "Sasha
Barrese", and "Jaime Chung" reprising their roles and making
cameo appearances. And as for the kid who played 'Tyler', his name "Grant
Holmquist", and he gave one of the most emotional and touching scenes in this franchise.
So 'The Hangover Part III' is the final movie
of a franchise that got a lot of criticism along the way. And no one can deny
that the 'Hangover' film series paved the way for future R-rated movies and set
the level really high.
