Official 'RoboCop(2014)' Poster.
The reboot/re-imagined movie of the original 1987 'Robocop' movie falls short in creating a new and different ride for the audience, who weren't really expecting much.

"Joel Kinnaman".
"Gary Oldman" and
"Michael Keaton".
In the year 2080, Omnicorp, headed by 'Raymond Sellars'(Michael Keaton) is now the largest multinational technology company and is providing the US military mechanical soldiers that are being deployed overseas. But these robots aren't allowed to function inside of the US due to the Dreyfus Act, which expresses the opinions of the people. Police Detective 'Alex Murphy'(Joel Kinnaman), along with his partner 'Jack Lewis'(Michael K. Williams) to arrest crime boss 'Antoine Vallon'(Patrick Garrow). After a bomb leaves him in serious condition, his wife 'Clara'(Abbie Cornish) consents his inclusion in a program that attempts in creating a half-man, half-robot combination to infuse it in the civil law enforcement in the US. After Dr. 'Dennett Norton'(Gary Oldman), the scientist responsible of this program, successfully creates Robocop and saves 'Alex''s life things prove difficult when the emotions of 'Alex' hinders the efficiency of the program. But trying to improve 'Alex' and suppress his emotions will become difficult especially when 'Alex' starts fighting the software. Other important characters include 'Patrick Novak'(Samuel L. Jackson) host of the 'Novak Element' show, 'Rick Mattox'(Jackie Earl Haley) drone controller and military technician, 'Liz Kline'(Jennifer Ehli) head of Omnicorp's legal affairs, 'Tom Pope'(Jay Baruchel), head of Omnicorp's marketing affairs, 'Jae Kim'(Aimee Garcia) scientist who assists Dr. 'Norton', and 'David'(John Paul Ruttan) 'Alex' and 'Clara''s son.

The work on a reboot for the famous and well received 1987 'Robocop' has been taking place for a while. Over the years the sequels of the movie and the TV series adaptations were criticized for being silly and repeating the same ideas. So when fans got proof in 2011 that the movie was being made, not all of them were ecstatic about the idea. Still, whether they were happy or not, a movie was being made and prepared. In the end, the director and producers decided to take a re-imagining direction rather than rebooting the original movie, since the ideas reflected at the time are closer to reality and existence now than they were 26 years before. The movie does tackle to idea of humanity and technology and the meeting point between the two, as well as other psychological ideas. Still, the movie fails to clearly take use of these ideas and reflect them in an entertaining manner, which is a shame since many of the ideas tackled in the movie were underused or just put to the side and ignored them.

"Jackie Earl Haley".
"Joel Kinnaman" and
"Michael K. Williams".
"Jose Padilha" had this movie as his first directorial attempt at a large Hollywood movie. He is known for his directing work in the 2007 movie 'Elite Squad' and 2010 'Secrets of the Tribe'. "Jose" lack of experience in such big budget movie is evident. His concentration in showing the characters development and their arcs pretty much dominated the actual action sequences of the movie. Yet he was successful in bringing us a believable cinematic world. The usage of CGI and special effects to be honest at many times were mediocre compared to other sci-fi/action movies. "Joshua Zetumer" penned the screenplay, which had a nice narrative trajectory but lacked the true development of the subplots, which if tackled rather than ignored could have improved the movie as a whole. Composer "Pedro Bromfman", who previously worked with "Padilha" on 'Elite Squad', provided a nice score that didn’t necessarily improved the whole experience, but rather kept along with the movie.

"Michael Keaton" and "Jennifer Ehli".
"Abbie Cornish" and
"Joel Kinnaman".
The beginning and the end for me were interesting, since apart from one to two scenes inside the movie, these were the only scene that "Samuel L. Jackson" actually took part in. The beginning was acceptable, allowing the audience to acquaint themselves to the world the movie takes place in and the main problem that the characters will face. The action sequences were few and underwhelming for my taste. The first real standoff scene that 'Robocop' faces against 'Mattox' and several robots was actually one of my favorite scene and really one of the few action sequences. This is one of the reasons why many felt a little bit unimpressed with the end result. Apart from this scene, the movie lacks a true standout moment that makes the movie special or truly memorable. Still the scenes where "Joel Kinnaman" and "Gary Oldman" interact with each other were nice to watch.

"Joel Kinnaman" provides a solid lead to this franchise as a new face to an already known character, yet his performance wasn't an extraordinary one. Still this exposure in this movie will facilitate him finding roles in future films. "Gary Oldman" could be billed as the star of the movie, since his performance did a sufficient job to show his character's complexity with the issue at hand. "Michael Keaton" does a good job, yet his character does little to stand out as a true villain. "Abbie Cornish" does her best to portray the wife of 'Alex', who was inefficiently used. Still the connection between her character and "Kinnaman" was acceptable, seeing that their relationship wasn't fully explored. "John Paul Ruttan" does a decent job portraying 'Clara' and 'Alex''s young distressed child. "Jay Baruchel", "Aimee Garcia", "Michael K. Williams" and "Jennifer Ehli" were very much under-used in the movie; "Jackie Earl Haley" does his best with a character whose true motive could have been explored more. "Samuel L. Jackson" inclusion in the movie, as mentioned before, was little, which surprised many seeing the large inclusion of his character in the marketing campaign and trailer.

'RoboCop' fails to be one of the better reboots or re-imagining movies in Hollywood, which is a shame seeing the talent and potential the movie held at its disposal.
