Review: Confessions of a Shopaholic

Official 'Confessions of a Shopaholic' Poster.
A not over-the-top and most creative comedy movie ever made, but in the end 'Confessions of a Shopaholic' is a movie to buy into.
"Isla Fisher".
"Hugh Dancy" and "Isla Fisher".
'Rebecca Bloomwood'(Isla Fisher) is a shopping addict, who lives with her best friend 'Suze Cleath-Stuart'(Krysten Ritter) and works for a gardening magazine but dreams of joining the fashion magazine 'Alette'. When she goes to an interview in 'Alette', the position she is being interviewed in gets filled. However, during a wild night organizing her bills sends a letter to 'Successful Savings' rather than 'Alette', which is run by 'Luke Brandon'(Hugh Dancy) and finds herself getting a job in a financial magazine, but accepts it thinking she would be able to move on to 'Alette'. But getting very deep into a lie will not be as easy as she thought it would be, especially since debt collector 'Derek Smeath'(Robert Stanton) is following her and jeopardizing her mission. Will she be able to make it to 'Alette' magazine while controlling her addiction to shopping or will her addiction ruin her life and the friendships she has? Other characters include 'Rebecca''s parents 'Graham'(John Goodman) and 'Jane'(Joan Cusack), 'Alicia Billington'(Leslie Bibb), 'Luke''s assistant 'Haley'(Julie Hagerty), 'Shopaholic Anonymous' group leader 'Miss Korch'(Wendie Malick), 'Suze''s fiancée 'Tarquin Cleath-Stuart'(Nick Cornish), 'Alette Naylor'(Kristin Scott Thomas) and 'Dantey West' CEO 'Edgar West'(John Lithgow).
"Joan Cusack", "John Goodman"
and "Isla Fisher".
"Krysten Ritter" and "Isla Fisher".
On paper this movie should have been an amazing success: being adapted by the best seller 'Shopaholic' by "Sophie Kinsella", including a young, fresh and funny cast, includes fashion (which has been getting hotter joining fashion in movies after the success of 'Sex and the City' the movie) and infusing current music and topics. But the movie is a rollercoaster, it has many shining and good moments yet it also has moments where it unfortunately fails. The comedy in this movie may at many times seems cliché and out-dated, but I truly think that thanks to the performance of its lead actress and is the main feature that makes the movie a fun film to watch (which allowed to bring forward the potential of this movie). On the other hand the drama was not as successful as the latter and failed in many instances, that is not to say that there were few moments where emotions and drama were portrayed successfully.
"Kristin Scott Thomas", "Isla Fisher"
and "Leslie Bibb".
"Isla Fisher".
Director "P.J. Hogan" is known for directing the 2003 big budget movie 'Peter Pan'(2003) and the hit romantic comedy 'My Best Friend's Wedding'(1997). The directing style helps the movie, yet the effort brought by him felt inconsistent and it was apparent the scenes that were reshoot in the post-production and then added to the original scenes that were shot. Screenwriters "Tim Firth"('Kinky Boots') and "Tracey Jackson"('The Other End of the Line') failed to bring essence and soul to the well written novel; it lacked the emotional connection, but excelled in the comedic lines and moments. Not working on important and big movies and rather on small TV movies shows their lack of experience in such areas, which is unfortunate since the story had so much potential and could have been tackled better. "James Newton Howard"('The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) gave an acceptable score, and the movie's soundtrack included tracks that complemented the movie but their inclusion in the movie was overused.
"Hugh Dancy" and "Isla Fisher".
"Isla Fisher" and Hugh Dancy".
The time of the movie is good, but the problem is the pacing of the movie. The movie at many times takes a long pause at unnecessary scenes, and then fast-track scenes that are actually deemed important to the story. In addition to that, the movie has many entertaining scenes, but what the movie suffers from is the joining of these scenes, which actually harmed the pacing of the movie. One of the best scenes of the movie is the whole Miami sequence, which includes 'Rebecca' and 'Luke' spending time together shopping and dancing and their interactions were one of the highlights and positive points of the entire movie. Other standout moments or sequences were 'Rebecca' and 'Suze' arranging the bills, 'Rebecca''s shopping scenes, 'Luke' interviewing 'Rebecca' for a job position, and finally 'Rebecca' and 'Derek' elevator scene. The ending could have been made much better and the credits scene was entertaining.
"Hugh Dancy" and "Isla Fisher".
"Wendie Malick" and "Isla Fisher".
"Isla Fisher" was perfect in this role, and her portrayal of this goofy, stylish, and intelligent shopaholic was in my opinion spot on in many moments. She was definitely the star of the movie, where all the standout comedic moments were hers. "Hugh Dancy" did well portraying the serious 'Luke', who falls in love with 'Rebecca'. "Isla" and "Hugh"'s on-screen romantic chemistry was there, but the relationship developments of their characters needed much polishing. "Krysten Ritter" was funny as 'Rebecca''s best friend but her role in the second and third half was unfortunately massively diminished. "Robert Stanton" fitted well the role of 'Derek Smeath', but the writers could have given him more depth. "John Goodman" and "Joan Cusack" were hilarious as 'Rebecca''s parents, "Leslie Bibb" had little character weight as the fahionesta 'Alicia', "Kristin Scott Thomas" was believable as 'Alette'(with a respectable French accent), and "John Lithgow" barely made an impact.

'Confessions of a Shopaholic' is a respectable romantic-comedy, which many will like it and others will like to dislike it. But certainly it’s an enjoyable movie, whose potential was limited.

Review: Letters to Juliet

Official "Letters to Juliet" Poster.
This romantic drama movie may be for many a cliché movie that is not worth watching, and to be honest that is what I first thought of it. But truth be told, never judge a book by its cover.
"Amanda Seyfried".
"Amanda Seyfried" and
"Vanessa Regrave".
'Sophie Hall'(Amanda Seyfried), a fact checker working for the 'The New Yorker', goes on a pre-honeymoon' with her fiancé 'Victor'(Gael Garcia Bernal) to Verona, Italy. While her fiancé gets busy trying to prepare for his soon-to open restaurant, 'Sophie' accidentally discovers a 50-year old unanswered 'letter to Juliet', at a wall in Verona's lover's courtyard where thousands of letters are left there to be then answered by the 'secretaries of Juliet'. After 1 week of answering the letter, she meets now elderly and widowed 'Claire Smith-Wyman'(Vanessa Redgrave) accompanied by her grandson 'Charlie Wyman'(Chris Egan). And after getting the advice of 'Sophie', the three of them decides to go and search for 'Claire''s long lost love 'Lorenzo Bartolini'(Franco Nero). Hope will be rejuvenated, Friendships will be made, and Love will be discovered and found. Other characters also include: 'Isabella'(Luisa Ranieri), 'Francesca'(Marina Massironi), 'Donatella'(Lidia Biondi), and ‘Maria’ (Milena Vukotic), the four 'secretaries of Juliet'. We also have 'Bobby'(Oliver Platt) editor of 'The New Yorker'.

"Chris Egan" and "Amanda Seyfried".
"Franco Nero" and
"Vanessa Redgrave".
Many people may decide not to watch this movie thinking it will be no different than the other romantic dramas that are being released. But there is something about this movie that makes you enjoy it. When I started watching it I decided that I am going to watch it with an open mind. Soon I found myself enjoying myself. Even though I knew what was going to happen in the end, I still wanted to stay and watch what was going to happen. The thing in this movie is that even if it has many elements that we have seen before in a romantic comedy, you still enjoy watching it.

"Amanda Seyfried" and
"Gael Garcia Bernal".
"Amanda Seyfried",
"Vanessa Redgrave", and
"Chris Egan".
One of the things that will enable you to enjoy this movie is the directing. This was "Gary Winick"(‘Bride Wars', '13 Going on 30', and 'Charlotte's Web') final movie acting as a director before he passed away. And being his final work, I think he did a really good job directing this movie. He brought to it a certain flair that distinguished it from the other movies within it genre group. Other elements that also helped the movie were the music which gave this romantic movie a pop background, which actually enhanced the overall final movie. Composer "Andrea Guerra"(‘Hotel Rwanda' and 'The Pursuit of Happyness') did a very good job making great romantic tunes to accompany the movie.

"Amanda Seyfried" and
'The Secretaries of Juliet'.
"Amanda Seyfried".
The overall flow of the movie was good. The movie's time frame was for me great and allowed all the necessary events and scene to have its breathing space. From start to finish the pace of the movie was great; however, in the middle the movie kind of slows a bit trying to transition. But it never does affect the movie really that much. I had three favorite scenes: the first was when 'Claire' and 'Lorenzo' finally meet again, the second one was when 'Sophie' gets the wedding invitation, and the third was when 'Claire' reads out loud the letter that 'Sophie' sent her. Yes there are many clichés, but who cares it isn't a movie made to impress critics, it was made to impress audiences.

"Chris Egan".
"Vanessa Redgrave" and
"Franco Nero".
The cast in this movie is a good cast. "Amanda Seyfried" was part of this movie when her stardom exploded. And for me she did a really good job till this day diversifying her roles. This for sure wasn't her best performance, but it was a good one. She was able to carry this movie, being one of the two main ladies of this movie. The other main actress was "Vanessa Redgrave", who is impeccable and even though it wasn't a movie that she had to give the best she can, she certainly gave it her all and never once does she falls flat. "Christopher Egan" did a really good job in my opinion. He was able to somehow develop his character with the material he got. And the chemistry between those three actors was great, and audiences could definitely feel the connection between "Amanda" and "Chris". It was a clever idea to cast "Franco Nero", real-life partner of "Vanessa Redgrave", as her lover in the movie. It allowed true emotions to be shown in their scenes. The other supporting actors did an OK job supporting the main cast.

'Letters to Juliet' is just one of those romantic dramas that you will enjoy watching. You may roll your eyes a couple of times, but it’s a romantic drama for teenagers and lovers. So why not watch it and roll your eyes, it’s worth it.

Review: Marley & Me

Official "Marley and Me" Poster.

A comedy-drama movie, whose story centers around a newlywed couple and a dog, may seem at first glance really boring. However, the constant chemistry between those three characters will draw you to it.
"Jennifer Aniston" and
 "Owen Wilson".
"Jennifer Aniston" and
 "Owen Wilson".
The movie talks about the lives of 'Johnny Grogan'(Owen Wilson) and 'Jennifer Grogan'(Jennifer Aniston) a newly married couple, who have just been hired as reporters in competing newspapers. When 'Johnny' sees 'Jennifer' contemplating motherhood, he decides to buy her a puppy. And coincidentally they fall in love with 'Marley', a puppy that will forever change their lives. We also meet 'Sebastian Tuney'(Eric Danna) 'Johnny''s friend, 'Arnie Klein'(Alan Arkin) 'Johnny''s boss, and 'Ms. Kornblut'(Kathleen Turner) a dog trainer.
This movie is based on a same named memoir by the "John Grogan", the person on which the main character was based on. I think the story is really good. Yes there is nothing spectacular in it and it is simple, but that is why it is so good. It allows you to relate in some way with these characters and the emotions they convey while dealing with struggles that many can relate to. The movie's pace was good, though for me I would have liked if it were longer since I think the movie was able to get a little bit more development.
"Jennifer Aniston" and
 "Owen Wilson".
"Owen Wilson".
Director "David Frankel", who gave us the big hit 'The Devil Wears Prada', for me, did a great job. Though I will admit his directing style did favor the characters over the story at various points. Nonetheless, I think he did a fantastic job. The editing was done in a good way. "Theodore Shapiro", the composer who provided the movie with the music, did an amazing job. It is worth mentioning that he previously worked with the director on 'The Devil Wears Prada' and 'Hope Springs'.
The opening scene was a great way to make the audience enter the movie and to give us just enough about each character. The overall pace of events was good, and I think the events that were given more time were the right ones. The scene where 'Johnny' starts talking in his column about the daily lives with 'Marley' was one of my favorite scenes. But the ending must be the best scene of the movie. It was really emotional and well acted and directed. It was heartbreaking to say the least.
"Owen Wilson" and
"Jennifer Aniston".
 .
"Owen Wilson" and "Eric Dana".
For me this is one of my favorite "Owen Wilson" roles. He really did a good job. Same goes to "Jennifer Aniston"; I think she did a wonderful job. And the chemistry with these two actors played a major role in making this movie a success. But of course the star of the movie was the character 'Marley'. Though 22 dogs played 'Marley' throughout the entire movie, anyone who has seen the movie cannot deny that they felt a certain attachment to this dog. "Eric Dana" and "Alan Arkin" were interesting supporting actors. And "Kathleen Turner"'s cameo appearance was appreciated.
Overall, 'Marley & Me' is a really enjoyable movie that proved to be an unprecedented success. I do recommend everyone to watch it, and at the end you may want to buy a dog!

Review: The Holiday

Official "The Holiday" Poster.
This Romantic-comedy movie has a good cast and is nicely acted, but lacks the surprise factor that it required to be a great one.
"Cameron Diaz".
"Kate Winslet".
'The Holiday' talks about 'Amanda Woods'(Cameron Diaz), an American movie trailer producer, who agrees to swap homes for two weeks with 'Iris Simpkins'(Kate Winslet), an English workaholic. During their respective stays 'Amanda' falls in love with 'Iris''s brother 'Graham'(Jude Law), a widower with two daughters, and 'Iris' develops a friendship with 'Arthur Abbot'(Eli Wallach) her old neighbor and famous producer, and 'Miles Dumony'(Jack Black). There is also Iris's former lover 'Jasper Bloom'(Rufus Swell), 'Amanda''s cheating boyfriend 'Ethan Ebbers'(Edward Burns), and 'Miles''s girlfriend 'Maggie'(Shannyn Sossamon).
The movie overall is a good movie within its genre. The story at the beginning is really interesting, but in the end these events were not used and developed in a very great way towards the end and became somehow clichés. However, this does not mean that it isn't a good film. I actually think that the work of director "Nancy Meyers" helped the movie. It concentrated on the character's development mainly, but still kept the aesthetic of the movie by using well the nature of the surrounding. I was surprised to know that "Hans Zimmer", whose previous works include 'The Dark Knight Rises', 'Inception', and 'Pirates of the Caribbean' trilogy, did the score in this one. And the melody 'Cry' in the soundtrack was the best.
"Jude Law".
"Jack Black".
The overall flow of the movie was good, although there were many scenes that felt too long and could have been trimmed of. At the beginning I really liked that the director took time to develop and show us the personalities of 'Amanda' and 'Iris'. However, towards the middle the movie kind of slowed down and became less interesting, and towards the end picked up steam. The best scene was the scene when 'Amanda' cried for the first time and ran back towards 'Graham', especially since they used the melody 'Cry'. The ending was predictable, but this movie is a romantic comedy, and usually they are predictable.
"Kate Winslet" and "Jack Black".
"Jude Law" and "Cameron Diaz".
What I liked in this movie that the cast was really one of the best romantic-comedy cast. They’re acting allowed the audience to feel close to them. "Cameron Diaz" was really good and I think she did a really good job balancing drama and comedy. "Kate Winslet" was great in emotional and dramatic scenes, but during the comedic ones she fell flat most of the time. "Jude Law" was perfect for this role and the best chemistry and couple scenes were between him and "Cameron Diaz". "Jack Black" did a good job, though I thought they could have chosen someone else. But that does not diminish his comedic talents, which he used very well in this movie. The other cast members did a good job.
'The Holiday' is a great movie for couples in love to watch. For those who like these kinds of movies, I encourage you to watch them; since I am sure you will have fun.

Review: Wicker Park

Official "Wicker Park" Poster.
This movie has a good plot and shows the acting skills of the cast; nevertheless, it should have had a more organized plot as well as a better director.
"Josh Harnett" and "Diane Kruger".
"Rose Byrne".
The talks about 'Matt Simon'(Josh Harnett), who accidentally thinks he bumped in on his love of his life again, 'Lisa Parish'(Diane Kruger), his love that left him 2 years ago. But what he doesn't know is that he has a secret crush called 'Alex Denver'(Rose Byrne), who is also the friend of 'Lisa Parish'. And here you will see unexpected events and a story that includes love, betrayal and obsession. The cast also includes "Mathew Lillard", who plays 'Luke Stanford' friend of 'Matt'.
"Diane Kruger" and "Rose Byrne".
"Josh Harnett".
The problem with this movie is that the acting is good and the story is interesting and nice, but the execution of this story was done badly. The movie was lacking a certain spark that usually a director gives it. The director "Paul McGuigan", who is known for his work in 'Lucky Number Sleven' , 'Push', and directing episodes 1 and 2 of the UK series 'Sherlock', didn't do a good job. And it is surprising considering that he directed 2 great episodes of the great series 'Sherlock'. The events and their flow were good, but at the same time they could have been more organized. The music was nicely done by "Cliff Martinez", who is known for his work with the 'Red Hot Chili Peppers'.
"Diane Kruger".
"Mathew Lilard".
The scenes in the movie were good, but none of them were memorable scenes. Still there is one scene, which in my opinion was one of the best scenes of this movie. It was at the end of the movie, when 'Matt' and 'Lisa' reunite at the airport. I think the emotions that were brought by the actors made this scene a good one.
"Josh Harnett" did a good job carrying this movie. It's a shame we aren't seeing him anymore in good roles or in films in general. "Diane Kruger” did a wonderful job, considering she had fewer screen time that "Harnett" and "Byrne". "Rose Byrne" also was very good with showing both sides of the character, although at some points she fell flat. "Mathew Lillard" did a good job, and I think he did the most with what he was given. And the chemistry between these four actors was noticeable.
Do I consider 'Wicker Park' a great movie? No. But will I recommend people to watch it? Yes. Since I do believe that it has a good story, but unfortunately the film as a whole wasn't spectacular.

Review: Eat, Pray, Love. :

"Eat, Pray, Love".

‘Eat, Pray, Love.’ , an enjoyable movie , based on the same name book  and starring “Julia Roberts”, has its beautiful moments, as well as its flaws.
"Javier Bardem" and "Julia Roberts".
"Julia Roberts".
‘Elizabeth Gilbert’(Julia Roberts) a woman , who thought she had everything she ever wanted, embarks on a journey to rediscover herself after divorcing her husband ‘Steven’(Billy Crudup). On this adventure she discovers the pleasure of nourishment , in Italy, the power of praying, in India, and true love, In Bali. The cast also includes “Javier Bardem” as ‘Felipe’, “Richard Jenkins” as ‘Richard’, “Viola Davis” as ‘Delia Chiraz’, and “James Franco” as ‘David’.
"Viola Davis" and "Julia Roberts".
"Julia Roberts".
The movie is an enjoyable one no doubt. It is an inspirational and magnificent story, which will leave you wondering about your choices in life and your future decisions. Though the actors did a really good job, the problem was it was too long. The producers, in my opinion, wanted to bring everything in the book, and that was a big problem. They added so many details, which sometimes undermined the movie’s quality, and scenes, that could have been omitted or removed. The pace of the movie is slow, compared to other movies in this genre, but on the plus side we were able to see “Julia Roberts” more!
"Julia Roberts" and "Billy Crudup".
"Richard Jenkins" and "Julia Roberts".
“Ryan Murphy”, known for his smash hit series ‘Glee’ and ‘American Horror Story’, in my opinion did a good job. It wasn’t outstanding, but at the same time it wasn’t as bad as many critics said and exaggerated. His style of directing, I would describe it as bringing a beautiful picture rather than focusing on the character’s deep issues and bringing them in a clear way. The places they shot in were amazing. My three favorite scenes were first the Italian thanksgiving dinner, second the rooftop scene in India, and third the ending scene in Bali.
"Julia Roberts" and "James Franco".
"Julia Roberts".
“Julia Roberts”, for me saved this movie big time. She did a very good job trying to clarify the character to us as much as she could. She and “Javier Bardem” had great onscreen chemistry, and their couple was believable. Basically she had chemistry with all of her fellow actors within this movie. “Javier Bardem” did a great performance, so did “Richard Jenkins”, “Billy Crudup”, “Viola Davis”, “James Franco”, and the supporting cast.
Ultimately, this movie should be watched due to the exceptional story. It may not be a masterpiece but it sure is one the most amazing stories I have ever seen.

Review: Crazy, Stupid, Love. :

"Crazy, Stupid, Love".
‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ has definetly one of the best cast ensemble ever for a comedy movie, at it can be considered as one of the best movies of 2011.
"Steve Carell" and "Ryan Gosling".
"Ryan Gosling" and "Emma Stone".
It talks about 'Cal Weaver'(Steve Carell), who just got divorced from his wife 'Emily Weaver'(Julianne Moore) and is trying to move on with his life. One night, he meets 'Jacob Palmer'(Ryan Gosling), who is a ‘ladies man’ and decides to help 'Cal' change his life. There is also 'Hannah Weaver'(Emma Stone), who is the daughter of 'Cal' and 'Emily' and  the love intrest of 'Jacob', 'Robbie Weaver'(Jonah Bobo), who is the son of 'Cal' and 'Emily', 'Jessica Riley'(Analeigh Tipton), the babysitter of the 'Weavers', 'David Lindhagen'(Kevin Bacon), the coworker with whom 'Emily' cheated with, and 'Kate Tafferty'(Marisa Tomei) the woman from the bar.
"Steve Carell" and "Julianne Moore".
"Ryan Gosling" and "Emma Stone".
The movie is really good. The directors “Glenn Ficarra” and "John Requa" did a really good job with the movie. They were able to keep the movie flowing easily, there are some scenes which could have been removed, but overall they did a really good job. This film has many clichés within the story, but somehow the movie brilliantly let us forget them. And this must be credited to the brilliant cast, who in my opinion was the thing that lifted this movie and made it so special and entertaining.
"Steve Carell" and "Analeigh Tipton".
"Jonah Bobo" and "Steve Carell".
“Steve Carell” was the perfect actor to play such a role. His jokes and lines are the best, and he is able to merge comedy and drama at the same time, though I personally prefer him in comedy. Ryan Gosling was great, and his chemistry with “Steve Carell” and the bromance they shared was great to see. Emma Stone as usual was great, and for me she was faultless. Many men envied “Ryan Gosling”, so did women who envied “Emma Stone” when they saw them in the ‘love scene’. The other cast were also great and did a really good job.
Overall, I think that the cast was the reason this movie was so great, and I thing the casting director did a really good job. It is definitely one of the best 2011 movies, and I recommend everyone , who haven’t seen it, to watch this ‘Blast from the Past’.

Review: Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

Official 'Salmon Fishing in the Yemen' Poster.
'A British romantic-comedy drama that really captivates you', this is how I would describe this movie. 'Salmon Fishing in the Yemen' talks about 'Harriet' (Emily Blunt), the assistant of a visionary 'Sheik Muhammad', who asks 'Dr. Alfred Jones' to help them in a new project that brings salmon fishing to Yemen.

 and "Amr Waked".
Yes it may not be the best movie of 2012, but it’s a really enjoyable movie. The movie really brings this new but at the same time weird story to the big screen in a very good way. Being based on the same name book by "Paul Torday", the director "Lasse Hallstrom" did a really good job bringing this book to life! Admitting that I haven’t read the book before, I thought that “Lasse” allowed the movie to move at a steady pace, and he managed to keep us interested in the characters and the events. I think this movie could be considered in the future as a classic movie for this kind of genre.

"Emily Blunt" is one of the most talented actresses these days, and one of my favorites. I thought that she was perfect portraying her character. "Ewan McGregor" also did a good job in developing his character. "Amr Waked", an Egyptian actor, who played 'Sheik Muhammad', was a surprise for me and was waiting for his performance to flop throughout the movie, but oddly enough it didn’t. I think this trio’s performance is what allowed this movie to be a good movie. "Kristin Scott Thomas" did a nice job and her character brought the humor to the movie.
Overall, this movie really surprised me. I never thought that it would be this good and that I will enjoy it and get attached to the characters. It’s a ‘Blast from the Past’ that is definitely worth the watch.
